Metro PCS

Metro PCS Review and Everything You Need To Know

Posted by CJ Stan

Metro PCS, which has since 2012 been renamed to Metro by T-Mobile following its merger with T-Mobile US, Inc., is a prepaid mobile network operator and wireless service carrier that operates in the United States. The company is currently one of the largest and most well known mobile telecommunications networks in the country as it currently runs off its parent company’s 4G and LTE network.

Metro has been able to carve out a market for itself in the United States because it offers a variety of affordable prepaid unlimited talk, text, and data plans. Also, the fact that it is a no-contract carrier has enticed its customers and further attracted a huge number of people to use its service since it is compatible with all unlocked GSM devices. Scroll down to find out more about Metro and see if you just might be their latest customer.

Metro PCS

Metro PCS, where PCS stands for Personal Communications Service, was founded in 1994 as General Wireless, Inc. Upon establishment, the company’s sole purpose was to acquire and operate broadband PCS licenses in the United States. By 1999, General Wireless evolved to Metro PCS Communications Inc., a company that provided cellular service through the code division multiple access (CDMA) network.

In 2007, Metro launched its IPO and became publicly traded. A few years after that, in 2010, Metro became the first mobile telecommunications network in the United States to offer service on an LTE network with an LTE handset, the Samsung Craft. Metro, at this time, operated what was the fifth largest telecommunications network in the United States. In 2012, in a bid to be able to compete with other major carriers, it agreed to a reverse merger with T-Mobile USA. MetroPCS shareholders officially approved the deal in April 2013 and the newly combined company went public on the New York Stock Exchange on the 1st of May, 2013. The CDMA network has since been scrapped and decommissioned by the Metro as all its users migrated the LTE network operated by T-Mobile.

Phone Plans

Metro PCS has a variety of plans that range from a talk and text only plan to others that include a data package and another that has a truly unlimited data plan. These plans have proven to be suitable to their customers since the company specializes in midrange $30 to $60 pricing. Furthermore, Metro offers family plan options to up to 5 lines for an extra $30 per line. Below is a breakdown of Metro’s plans.

Network Coverage

As mentioned above, Metro PCS runs off T-Mobile’s network which is ranked as the third best in cell phone coverage in the United States. The network has a 95.1% coverage & reliability score from 280 major U.S. markets

Note that the type of device you use can determine the strength of coverage you receive. Newer phones and models tend to get more coverage than older ones because they have the radio technology to tap into newer, faster spectrums that are rolled out by carriers. An example would be the Band 12 spectrum that was released by T-mobile in 2017 which allows for better coverage inside buildings. Phones like the iPhone 5S do not have the radio tech to tap into that spectrum, however, newer models like the iPhone 6S and so on do.
