| picoChip details industry’s first LTE picocell and femtocell reference designs picoChip this week disclosed further details of the industry’s first complete LTE basestation reference designs. The PC8618 picocell and PC8608 femtocell platforms, respectively designed in conjunction with picoChip’s development and research partners, mimoOn and ASTRI, will enable high capacity wireless networks for enterprise, metropolitan, “hot-zone”, home and rural demands. The two designs run on picoChip’s established PC203 processor and will support both FDD (frequency division duplex) and TDD (time division duplex) modes within LTE. |

| Sniffers enable self-organizing wireless networks picoChip has announced three “sniffer” or radio environment scanner (RES) reference designs that provide the fundamental measurement and reporting information needed for basestations to implement self-organizing network (SON) principles. The PC8210, PC8211 and PC8810 RESs enable femtocells to detect WCDMA, GSM and TD-SCDMA networks respectively, and will allow network operators to deliver services based on a combination of 2G, 3G and LTE infrastructure. Such network listen capabilities are essential to automate the tasks of cell planning, synchronization and handover within networks. More... |

| GCC community accepts picoChip compiler port picoChip’s C compiler has been accepted as an official port for the GNU Compiler Collection (GCC). The compiler is part of a suite of tools developed to support picoChip’s multi-core picoArray devices. picoChip’s port is the first to achieve acceptance in nearly two years; and the first that has been designed as part of a suite of tools for realizing massively multi-core systems. In total, compilers from just eight companies have joined the list since 2002. |

| LTE World Summit: why macrocells cannot deliver LTE
In addition to providing further details on its upcoming LTE products (see above), at the LTE World Summit in London this week picoChip showcased its industry-first LTE reference design, created in collaboration with mimoOn. picoChip’s solution, built on a common platform with its market-leading WiMAX solutions, is uniquely scalable from single-chip Home eNodeBs (femtocells) to large multi-cellular carrier macrocells. And at the conference, Dr Doug Pulley, picoChip's co-founder and CTO, explained why femtocell solutions are likely to be more important than ever for LTE networks. |
