Brilliant announces NTP client IP License for Picochip SoCs
18 August 2010
Campbell, Calif. – August 17, 2010 – Brilliant Telecommunications, Inc., a leading supplier of next-generation packet-based, network synchronization equipment and monitoring solutions, announced the availability of Brilliant’s NTP client synchronization technology with Picochip’s multi-award winning picoXcell PC3xx series systems-on-chip (SoCs). Brilliant’s proven, high-performance timing algorithm utilizes Picochip’s next-generation system architecture and silicon to enable OEM femtocell equipment makers to deliver best-in-class solutions for the rapidly expanding global femtocell and picocell markets.
“Brilliant continues to gain market recognition and validation through global deployments of its timing and synchronization solutions,” said Nigel Toon, CEO, Picochip. “Femtocell deployments are now gathering pace, with mobile operators increasingly looking beyond the residential environment to enterprise, metropolitan and rural applications. Combining the flexible and cost-effective architecture of our picoXcell PC3xx series and Brilliant’s expertise in timing and synchronization helps our customers to realize this wide range of deployment scenarios.”
Global mobile operators are beginning to realize the importance of femtocells, as demonstrated by commercial deployments currently underway in the USA, Europe and Asia. These deployments are driven by the need to offer improved network coverage coupled with the need for mobile data offload. MarketsandMarkets, a global market research and consulting company, predicts the global femtocell market is projected to grow from $230 million in 2009 to $4.6 billion in 2014, represnting a CAGR or 82.6 percent. The U.S. is expected to have the largest femtocell market in 2010 and is also expected to have the highest CAGR of 84.5 percent.
The joint Picochip and Brilliant timing solution will facilitate advances in FDD-based femtocell and picocell networks by providing improved frequency accuracy and holdover characteristics with the use of low-cost oscillators. The timing solution, which is available as a licensable NTP client, includes a high-performance network timing recovery algorithm to reduce RF interference, ensure high quality of service, improve handovers and minimize dropped calls. Co-operative effort by Picochip and Brilliant means that both new and existing PC3xx users will be able to easily implement Brilliant’s timing technology with minimal design effort.
“Picochip has long been considered the leader in the development of the femtocell market through its ability to offer a broad range of highly integrated solutions that have been validated through numerous OEM femtocell design wins deployed and operational in mobile operator networks globally,” commented Dr. Charles Barry, President, Brilliant Telecommunications. “Brilliant’s licensed NTP synchronization software, coupled with Picochip’s best-in-class core technology, establishes a new paradigm in price performance.”
